By 1634, when Henrico became one of the eight original Virginia shires, its boundaries encompassed present-day Chesterfield and Powhatan counties on the south of the James River, and Goochland County on the north. Henrico's parish lines were co-terminus with the county and originally embraced the entire valley of the
    James River
    and westward.
The famous liberty speech of Patrick Henry was delivered in this old church.
In 1737 the first mention is made in the vestry records concerning the building of the present church - the 4th or 5th
    Henrico
    Parish
    Church
. The minutes record that the new church was to be 60 ft long and 25 wide and was to be a "moddle"; of
    Curles
    Church
. It wasn't until 1740 when William Byrd II granted the vestry two city lots in the
    new city
    of
    Richmond
that construction could begin however. Not only did Byrd grant the land, he also gave the timber running to Shockoe Creek for the boards and the scrap wood to fire the bricks for the foundations. Richard Randolph, Gentlemen, was to be the builder. It is believed that the church was completed June 10, 1741
The first half of this book lists the births, marriages, deaths and tombstone inscriptions in Henrico Parish,
    St. John's
    Church

Addenda – Vestry Book of Henrico parish 1730-1773
When the Parishes were created by the General Assembly of
    Virginia
, the Vestries were assigned some of the civil administrative functions and all of such civil functions were official in nature. The records of actions taken were recorded in the vestry book.
This vestry contains two different sets of records; the minutes of the vestry (civil functions) and also the order for processing (the surveying of land for granting of deeds).
Parish business recorded in this book includes names of the sick & poor helped by the parish and their caretakers
