Anne Arundel County (1650)
is named for
Anne Arundell
(1615-1649), a member of the ancient family of
Arundells in
Cornwall, England
and the wife of Cæcilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore. Its
county seat
is
Annapolis
, which is also the
capital
of the state.
Howard County
(formed 1851 from Anne Arundel
) was named for
John Eager Howard
, an officer in the
American Revolutionary War
and later the fifth
Governor of Maryland
. Its
county seat
is
Ellicott City
. The
center of population
of Maryland is located on the county line between Howard County and
Anne Arundel
County
, in the
unincorporated town
of
Jessup
.
