The county was named after the historical Chowanoc American Indian tribe, also called Chowan. It was formed in 1685, the name Shaftesbury was changed to Chowan (Precinct of Albemarle County, which was formed 1684).
During the American Civil War, the Albemarle Artillery was recruited in 1862 from Chowan and Tyrrell men at Edenton by local attorney
William Badham, Jr.. After cannon were recast from bronze donated as bells from local courthouses and churches to arm the battery,
the unit was renamed the Edenton Bell Battery. They named their cannon: Columbia, St. Paul, Fannie Roulac, and Edenton. Two of the guns,
long thought lost, have been returned to Edenton in recent years.
The St. Paul and the Edenton now can be seen on display at Edenton's waterfront park.

These are government scanned copies of the original
handwritten census records.
Legibility varies, depending on handwriting of census taker, quality of ink used, paper
damage over the years, quality of the scanning process.
Different from transcribed census records, these contain all information collected by the
census taker. These also give a sense of relatives and neighbors living nearby.
Due to population increases, more recent years require multiple files
for each census year.  Some of the earlier years also include records for other counties.
