The Muscogee (or Muskogee), also known as the Creek or Creeks, are a Native American people traditionally from the southeastern United States.
In August 1814, the Red Sticks surrendered to Jackson and the Muscogee nation was forced to sign the Treaty of Fort Jackson. It ended the war and
required the tribe to cede some 20 million acres of land— more than half of their ancestral territorial holdings— to the United States. Even those who had
fought alongside Jackson were compelled to cede land, since Jackson held them responsible for allowing the Red Sticks to revolt. The state of Alabama was
created largely from the Red Sticks' domain and was admitted to the United States in 1819.
Following the Indian Removal Act, in 1832 the Creek National Council signed the Treaty of Cusseta, ceding their remaining lands east of the Mississippi to
the U.S., and accepting relocation to the Indian Territory. Most Muscogee were removed to Indian Territory during the Trail of Tears in 1834, although some remained behind.
The Indian Territory, also known as the Indian Territories and the Indian Country, was land set aside within the United States for the settlement of
American Indians. The general borders were set by the Indian Intercourse Act of 1834.
The Indian Territory served as the destination for the policy of Indian Removal, a policy pursued intermittently by American presidents early in the
nineteenth century, but aggressively pursued by President Andrew Jackson after the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The Five Civilized
Tribes in the South were the most prominent tribes displaced by the policy, a relocation that came to be known as the Trail of Tears during the
Choctaw removals starting in 1831. The trail ended in what is now Arkansas and Oklahoma, where there were already many Indians living in the
territory, as well as whites and escaped slaves. Other tribes, such as the Delaware, Cheyenne, and Apache were also forced to relocate to the Indian territory.
In time, the Indian Territory was reduced to what is now Oklahoma; and then, with the organization of Oklahoma Territory in 1890, to just the eastern half of the area.
The name “Oklahoma” is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people. Formed by the combination of Oklahoma Territory and
Indian Territory on November 16, 1907.
